Clean Fuels Project

Clean Fuels Project

The Clean Fuels Project not only enhanced KNPC's refining capabilities and environmental compliance but also strengthened our position in the global market while contributing to the local economy. This strategic Project re-iterated our commitment to operational excellence, sustainability, and economic development.

The Clean Fuels Project represented a significant milestone for Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC). This transformative initiative has led to the comprehensive upgrade and development of Mina Abdullah and Mina Al-Ahmadi Refineries. The current refining capacities are 346,000 bpd for the Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery and 454,000 bpd for Mina Abdullah Refinery. Together, these Refineries form an integrated complex with a total capacity of 800,000 bpd. This integration enhances our operational flexibility and responsiveness to market demands and customer needs.

Overview

Eco-Friendly Petroleum Products

The Clean Fuels Project encompassed the installation of 76 new units across both Refineries, with 7 units upgraded and 7 more were shutdown. In total, 4,045 new pieces of equipment have been installed. These new units employed cutting-edge technology to produce high-quality, eco-friendly petroleum products that meet the stringent Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards. These products contained very low levels of sulfur, nitrogen oxides, metals, and other pollutants, significantly reducing emissions and environmental impact.

1

Reaching New Markets

This enabled KNPC to have a competitive edge and allowed entry into previously inaccessible markets such as Europe and North America. The units are currently more energy-efficient, with enhanced operational reliability, availability, and safety. This reduced interruptions and unplanned shutdowns, leading to cost-effective operations and more competitive products.

2

Environmental Impact

The environmental impact has been substantially reduced, with KNPC now supplying clean fuel oil to power stations and providing the local market with all grades of clean gasoline, gas oil, and kerosene.

3

Economic Contribution

The Clean Fuels Project has significantly boosted the local economy by involving local contractors and suppliers in all Project phases. Local content accounted for 34% of the total project work. Furthermore, future maintenance and service contracts will include a national workforce component, comprising 25% of such contracts.
